The Austral Summer Institute XI (ASI XI)

60 students from Brazil, Colombia, Chile,  Ecuador, Trinidad & Tobago, the United States and Venezuela, participated in the Austral Summer Institute XI (ASI XI), organized by the Department of Oceanography and the Center for Oceanographic Research in the eastern South Pacific (FONDAP COPAS) of the University of Concepcion.

ASI XI consisted of 5 courses on the general topic “From tsunamis to water pathogens: Understanding ocean hazards in the XX Century”. These were: Understanding tsunamis and preparing to cope with (3-7 January), Tectonics and recurrence of great subduction earthquakes (10-14 January), Marine hazards to human health: Natural and anthropogenic (17-21 January), The ocean carbon cycle: From ocean acidification to oil spills (24-28 January) and Biological Oceanography (24-28 January).

Professors and students of the course “Understanding tsunamis and preparing to cope with” visited Dichato and Penco, two of the areas that were affected by the earthquake and tsunami of February 27, 2010. They visited the site where the Marine Biological Station in Caleta Villarrica, Dichato, used to be.
