A new building for the Department of Oceanography

With a significant ceremony held on December 14th 2010, the Department of Oceanography inaugurated its new building located in the Main Campus of the University of Concepcion, in Concepcion, Chile. The event brought together academic authorities, faculty, technicians, administrative staff, student representatives and special guests related with the study of ocean sciences in our country.

Professor Sergio Lavanchy, Rector of the University of Concepcion, presented the new building to the Dean of the Faculty of Natural and Oceanographic Sciences, Dr. Franklin Carrasco. During his inaugural speech, Rector Lavanchy highlighted the importance of the moment, emphasizing that “the real value of this facility is the fact that the academic community of professors, students, researchers and support staff -which are the true essence and value of an institution such as ours-, may continue in the path of academic excellence which has caractherized the Department of Oceanography and the FONDAP COPAS Center.”

During his speech, Dean Franklin Carrasco summarized the milestones of our department and its academics, thanking everyone involved in the construction of this new facility.

The new building is the result of the collaboration and vinculation with the National Commission for Scientific and Technological Research (CONICYT), Arauco and the Agouron Institute. It will host professors from the Department of Oceanography and researchers from the Center for Oceanographic Reserch in the eastern South Pacific (FONDAP COPAS) of the University of Concepcion.

Labs and Infrastructure

State of the art labs implemented to carry out multi-disciplinary research on different aspects of ocean sciences, are located in the new building. Among others: Coastal Oceanography, Marine Organic Biogeochemistry, Physical Oceanography, Plankton, Pelagic Resources, Molecular and Microbial Biology, Radioisotopes, Icthioplankton, Benthos, Paleoceanography and Enzymatic Biogeochemistry.

The total construction area of the building is 2000 sqm and it was designed on three levels. One of them is destined to labs, another one to offices and the third one for connection and circulation. The total building cost, including the architectural project and work for special equipment is clp MM$1.535.
